THE PREZ SEZ

Darn, I guess it’s nearing that time again when we must prepare to bid farewell to another summer.    It doesn’t seem possible, but next week most of our area schools will be back in session.  That provides us with more opportunities to hunt in our parks since they will no longer be over-run by screaming kids.  One can only hope that this year our fall and winter weather is a whole lot better than last year.  I don’t recall getting out much at all after Halloween last year; not that my turning 65 on Halloween had anything to do with my being too much of a wimp to head out in cold weather to hunt. I now see and feel the reasons that retirees head south for the cold winter months.  Hopefully the coming seasons will be more akin to those of two years ago when I was able to hunt clear up to the middle of January before having to store the detectors.

As you can no doubt tell, I’m just rambling here trying to put together something for Harry to include in our monthly newsletter.  One thing I do need to mention here is the need for all of us to put on our thinking caps and come up with some really good sites for our future Brown Bag Hunts.  We have a BB Hunt scheduled for September 12th but no site designated for the hunt.  I’m certain that with the quality of our membership, we will remedy this situation at our next meeting on September 3rd.  I hope everyone is able to attend our next meeting as we will also be finalizing plans for the Fall Seeded Hunt scheduled for October 10th.  Till then, take the best of care, happy hunting and May God Bless.

SUMMER IS WINDING DOWN

So August is about over and we are finding that this was a quick hard summer for metal detecting.

Coming up is a month full of fall hunts by the various clubs in our part of western Pennsylvania.

If you belong to several like I do than you have some tough decisions. Even though I can not dirt dig I can at least go and win the raffles providing a certain couple does not buy any. Yes You, You know who I mean.

Only a few more weeks of water detecting which I am able to do. So perhaps I will have a few trinkets to show at the meeting in September.

Now is the time to just think about what you would like to do with your finds.  Some members will make display cases. Some may want to catalog their finds and put them into albums.

You may want to build a PVC stand for your detector to keep it up off the wet grass. Perhaps it is time to cruise the internet looking for sales, good stories, and ideas for our club.

I get the feeling that someone may find that big expensive ring or relic and make the Western & Eastern Magazine.

Why not write a story about your special find and submit it to lost Treasures magazine.

I have had two printed in magazines of the recovering of jewelry for people.

Go ahead and try to write something, it is easier than you think. Heck I did it so can you.

See younz September the third >3rd.

 Christmas Party Meeting

The meeting and Christmas Party will be held on the normal meeting night of December 3rd.

The membership voted in favor of selling tickets for the Christmas Party.

The reason for tickets is that the Penn Bistro needs advance notice of the number of members attending so that they can order the proper amount of food.

The other reason is that when we tell them how many are attending, we must pay for that many.

You must purchase your tickets by November 20th.

We have to let the Penn Bistro know by November 30th.

50/50 winner- Red Craft, Door Prize- George Merulli, Hunt Raffle- Red again
Brown Bag report

Red

We had a pretty good day at the hunt today, but we were shy a few members.  Sorry that so many of you were unable to participate. One member found 2 Silver Washington Quarters, another found A 10K Woman's Gold Band, another found a small Sterling Silver Band and one member found a Scout Kerchief Slide that looked as though it may be Gold Plated.  Most everyone found some clads and their fair share of pull tabs and misc. junk.  Harry Niemeyer stopped by at the park to say hello, but wasn't able to stay and hunt.

Doris

Here are some photos from our finds at the brown bag hunt in Economy Park.  Bob was very excited about finding the 2 silver quarters, but I had to put him in his place after I found the 10kt gold ring.

Monday the 10th I received a call from a lady by the name of Christine asking to rent a detector. I told her it was better if I came out and found it for her. We scheduled to meet at her house on Tuesday the 11th. That day I called Red Craft and asked him if he would like to come along.  Red met me at 4:00pm and off we went to Crafton Pa to recover a lost ring.

Upon arrival we went to the wrong apartment and scared a lady when Red picked up a piece of trash and placed it into her trash container.  I called Christine on my cell phone and she talked us over to her place.

She described the ring to us and how she had lost it. She was playing ball in her back yard. She took off her rings and put them into her pocket. During the games she realized they were not there. She found one large gold and diamond engagement ring but they could not find the emerald ring.  I told Red that it will come in about a 10 on the XLT.

Red and I started working a pattern through her yard which was full of aluminum bits & pieces.

With my XLT I was constantly getting 80, 88, 91 etc readings this sure was a messy yard.

Red was not having much luck either with his Spectrum V3.

It seemed that we were into a field of quarters & silver but after digging a quite a few metal pieces we just ignored the high numbers.

After about an hour of searching I decided to walk back to the truck and change to a five inch coil.  Upon returning and coming near my detector I seen Red scratching the soil with his fingernail. He had the ring; it was in the wet surface, but bent a little out of shape from the lawn mower.  The ring came in as a 12 – 13 on his V-3.

The girl screamed; I thought she was going to jump on top of Red, and her boy friend said now she can stop crying. Of course we received several large hugs and a promise to email me a photo of the ring for our newsletter.

This was Reds first large expensive find. We both went home feeling very good to have found it for Christine.

Christine’s ring photo is above.
