THE PREZ SEZ

To put it mildly, my enthusiasm for this detecting season is diminished due to the sad fact that two of the Founders of BCDC are unable to join us in our endeavors.  Harry Niemeyer with his knee replacement and now Boobie with a diagnosis of cancer is enough to dampen anyone’s spirit.  I just learned that another of our members, Harry VanRiper, is out of commission with some pretty serious back complications.  I’d sooner experience another bout of “cabin fever” than to have these circumstances.  We’re blessed to have such a great group of people that comprises our Club’s make-up and we need everyone healthy, happy and hunting.  Please keep these members in your thoughts and prayers, and pray for their speedy and full recovery.  Till next time, take the best of care and May God Bless Us All.

Hunt Naked

Got your attention, but it is not what you think. Quite a few metal detectors out there are Transmitter Receiver Motion machines. The motion part is what we are concerned about. As you are sweeping your coil, the detector is adjusting to and canceling out the mineralization in the soil. If you hit a target and hold the coil in one place over the target, it will gradually fade it out. The coil must be moving over the target. As with all detectors, the electro magnetic field not only extends below the coil, but also above and to the sides. That’s why when two detectors are too close to each other they chatter or talk to each other. For example, my Minelab Explorer with a 15” WOT coil will pick up my sand scoop when I pass it over the coil at 2-1/2 to 3 feet away. Getting back to the naked part, the detector is also tuning out all of the metal on you, such as shoes, belt buckles, change, rings, watches and car keys. The more metal and minerals your detector is tuning out robs its electronics from seeing the good targets you are looking for. So keep all the metal items off of you as you can. The less metal on you means your detector can think more clearly.

Hunt as naked as you can.

It is equally important not to run your metal detector at maximum sensitivity. This will cause the detector to see more mineralization. For example: in dense fog, if you were to turn on your high beams, what happens? The fog lights up and you see less. If you use low beams or fog lights you can see clearer. The same thing happens with your detector—more is not better. Hunt Smart!
